Mapping the Journey: Technology Brings Study-Abroad Option in Costa Rica to Life

2017 Sep 5

Wittenberg recently partnered with Veritas University and Beyond Sports, an international education and service-learning organization that uses sports as a vehicle to create meaningful, relationship-based global engagement opportunities, to offer a semester-long program in Costa Rica, Jan. 1 - May 1, 2017.

Seven students signed up for this unique immersion experience, which the following ESRI story map recreates in vivid color and detail. Follow the link below to experience Costa Rica all over again through the students who participated and the program's inaugural director, John Ritter, professor of geology.

The program will be offered each spring, with Professor of Biology Margaret Goodman serving as director in 2018 and teaching a course on health care in Costa Rica that will contrast nutrition, fitness and medicine in the United States and Costa Rica and explore medicinal plants in the rainforest. In the spring of 2019, Associate Professor of Communication Stefne Broz will direct the program and teach a course on Central American cultures and communication. For the spring of 2020, Women's Head Volleyball Coach Paco Labrador will direct and teach Sports Psychology, which will explore concepts of skill acquisition including learning theory, growth mindset and deliberate practice; students will have the opportunity to create individual research projects with professional and semi-professional coaches and athletes.
